BREAKING NEWS: Wenger to stand down as Arsenal manager

20 April 2018
Arsene Wenger has announced he will stand down as Arsenal manager at the end of this season, ending a tenure spanning three decades with the Premier League club.
Wenger joined Arsenal in October 1996, leading the Gunners to the Premier League title the following season.
The 68-year-old won two further top-flight crowns and a record seven FA Cups as many of his methods from preparation to a bold and free-flowing tactical approach on the field revolutionised football in England.
However, Arsenal last won the Premier League in 2003-04 and recent seasons have been marked by a growing discontent among the Emirates Stadium fanbase, with attendances dwindling at home games of late.
Wenger signed a two-year contract extension after last May's FA Cup final victory over Chelsea but he has decided the time is right to step aside with his Europa League semi-finalists currently sixth in the Premier League.
"After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season," Wenger said in a statement released on Arsenal's official website.
"I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years. I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.
"I want to thank the staff, the players, the directors and the fans who make this club so special."
49 - Under Arsene Wenger, Arsenal went a record 49 consecutive top-flight league games unbeaten from May 2003 to October 2004, breaking Nottingham Forest's previous record of 42 set between November 1977 & November 1978 under Brian Clough. Legendary.
The atmosphere around Arsenal during his later years has sometimes verged on mutinous and Wenger is keen for supporters to pull together during his final days, with a Europa League showdown against Atletico Madrid on the horizon next week.
Winning Europe's secondary competition represents the remaining opportunity for Wenger to furnish his successor with Champions League football next term.
"I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high," he added.

"To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club."

Fury fires warning at Joshua, Wilder

Tyson Fury has sent a fierce warning to heavyweight rivals Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder, saying that he is ready to “claim what is rightfully mine” The Independent reports.
The former unified heavyweight champion has been out of the ring since October 2015 after his crowning evening against Wladimir Klitschko in Düsseldorf. He announced on Thursday that he was set to return to the ring on June 9 at the Manchester Arena, having signed for Frank Warren.
After spending an extended period on the sidelines due to personal as well as legal issues with the boxing board of control, Fury has been training with new coach Ben Davison after parting from uncle Peter Fury and looks to be returning to a competitive weight.
Speaking at a press conference, Fury sent a warning to the two current heavyweight champions. Discussing Joshua, Fury claimed, “He’s a big old dosser, belt carrier for me. By the time I get ready to fight, it’s going to be an easy fight. He’s looking for one punch all night. I have a tip for him, ‘get a handful of rice and throw it on me’, other than that he has no chance [of touching me]. He has no chance, he’s not the biggest puncher in the world. I’d outbox him for a few rounds and then I would knock him out.”
Across the pond, it is Wilder who holds the WBC title and Fury believes that he is the biggest threat in the division.
“Deontay is top of the pile, he’s dangerous until the last two seconds. He only needs one punch. Unlike AJ he has the agility to land punches from anywhere. They’re all very vulnerable and beatable.”
The opponent that Fury will face in his comeback fight has yet to be announced, with Warren confirming it would announced in “due course”, while confirming Fury’s contract is a “multi-fight deal”.

Marcelo: Real Madrid weren´t going to bow out like Barcelona

Marcelo insisted Real Madrid were never going to capitulate like fierce rivals Barcelona after the Champions League titleholders dramatically survived against Juventus.
Madrid kept their quest for a European three-peat alive with a 4-3 aggregate victory over Juventus in the quarter-finals, despite Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Italian champions.
Zinedine Zidane's men were poised for the semi-finals following last week's 3-0 win in Turin, only for Juve to mount a remarkable comeback in the return leg as they levelled the tie thanks to Mario Mandzukic's double and Keylor Navas' fumbled cross midweek.
But Madrid managed to deny the rallying visitors after Lucas Vazquez was fouled by Medhi Benatia – Cristiano Ronaldo stepping up to convert the stoppage-time goal.
Marcelo – the captain in the absence of suspended skipper Sergio Ramos – could not help himself from having a dig at Barca, who surrendered a 4-1 first-leg advantage in a stunning 3-0 collapse against Roma on Tuesday.
"We should face and we did everything possible to go through," the Brazil international full-back said.
"What happened to Barcelona wasn't going to happen to us because we're Real Madrid."
There were dramatic scenes at the death when referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot after substitute Vazquez was brought down by Benatia.
Juve goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon angrily protested the decision before he was sent off for the first time of his storied career in the Champions League.
Asked about the penalty, Marcelo said: "The penalty was very clear."
Madrid will face either Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Roma in the final four.

Del Piero questions Buffon criticism of referee Oliver

Gianluigi Buffon may regret his criticism of referee Michael Oliver after being sent off against Real Madrid on Wednesday, according to Juventus icon Alessandro Del Piero.
Goalkeeper Buffon was shown a red card for his furious reaction towards the English official, who awarded Madrid a crucial stoppage-time penalty in the Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Juve cancelled out a 3-0 deficit to draw level in the tie, only for Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty to send the defending champions through to the last four following Medhi Benatia's clumsy challenge on Lucas Vazquez.
Buffon claimed after the game Oliver had a "trash can" instead of a heart, while he also referenced the first leg in Turin when Juve had Paulo Dybala sent off.
However, while understanding the obvious frustration after going out in such dramatic circumstances, Del Piero disagreed with his former team-mate's post-match analysis.
"When Gigi spoke about the referee I couldn't understand him, honestly," the former Italy international said on Sky Sport Italia.
"I don't understand why he talked about the previous fixture. In football you analyse the present.
"I understand it's a frustrating situation but I think he will think about what he said and possibly say different words in a few days."
With Buffon sent off, Ronaldo scored past substitute goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny as Madrid triumphed 4-3 on aggregate.

Poll: Oliver right to award Madrid penalty and send off Buffon

Former referee Graham Poll insisted Michael Oliver was correct in his decisions to award Real Madrid a last-gasp penalty and send off Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon in a dramatic Champions League clash.
Two-time reigning champions Madrid advanced to the semi-finals 4-3 on aggregate, despite a controversial 3-1 defeat to Juventus in the Spanish capital on Wednesday.
With extra time looming following Juve's stunning comeback, English referee Oliver awarded Madrid a stoppage-time penalty – which Cristiano Ronaldo converted – after Medhi Benatia's foul on substitute Lucas Vazquez.
Enraged by the decision, Buffon was then red carded for the first time in the Champions League after furiously confronting Oliver, who was surrounded by Juve players at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Oliver was heavily criticised by Buffon and others post-match but Poll hailed his countryman's performance in Madrid.
"Michael Oliver, only promoted to the elite group of officials in January, justified the decision with some very strong but correct refereeing in the Bernabeu," Poll wrote for the Daily Mail.
"With scores level in a gripping quarter-final heading for extra time, Oliver was courageous enough to award a penalty which, once converted, took Real Madrid through to the semi-final.
"He didn't stop there. Surrounded and disgracefully harassed by half a dozen or so menacing Juventus players, led by their talismanic captain, Oliver – 33 - stayed calm and correctly dismissed Gianluigi Buffon for his aggressive protests.
"Arsene Wenger once told me I was talking rubbish when I said a referee needed courage to give big decisions. I imagine after watching this he will understand.
"What a pity the FA didn't promote Oliver sooner so he could have been eligible for the World Cup."
